15 years after I played it, this sentence remains as true as it was, if not even more. It's Tri-Ace's apex, everything they made doesn't even come close to what they did, not even its own sequel.
The complexity of the combat system that lies underneath its staggering simplicity is a sight to behold. Easy to play, but you can bet it is hard to master. The game doesn't do a good job to show you how great it can be, I admit. But when you do understand how everything works, the amount of customization, the usefulness of items and the freedom that it leaves to the player, you cannot be anything but amazed.

Characters are just so different, their attack patterns gives to endless combination, trying every character is something that you want to do and even their combos is as tactical as it can be. Do combos on the ground and the game gives you orb that reduces the charge time for the caster, do juggle combos and it gives you experience crystals. There is not an aspect of the combat system that is left out.

And to this day, I still cannot think of a single gameplay system that I think is better. The only gripe I have with the system is the fact that the game is not really well balanced (Angel Curios, Guts) and the fact that the casters are not much different from each other, you could keep Jelanda through the whole game and it would still be fine.
What do you guys think ? Tri-Ace is known for making incredibly interesting combat system but Valkyrie Profile sure is something else. I still play this game today, and it still makes me feel like I'm playing it like it's the first time, there's always new stuff to experiment and this is what makes it truly incredible.
